Accomplish your Design Resolution

New Year’s resolutions are great at ditching bad habits and owning new positive skills. But, what about writing down a New Years Resolution that will make you a way better designer than you already are.

Written on the 28th day of December in 2009.
2010 is almost here and you're about to start a fresh year that will be way better than all the rest. Not because it's a new year, but because you are better, stronger, and more knowledgeable than the year we're waving goodbye.

I for one have few design resolutions that I want to accomplish in 2010. One of them has to do with becoming better at typography and how I use my typefaces.

As I am playing The Font Game by I Love Typography, I realize how little I know my type. The best score I got was 20 right answers out of 30 for about 2 minutes. Well, let me be clear: I know my Emigre, my Hoefler and Frere-Jones, my Adobe, but what about the difference between Amalia Bold Italic and Calluna Bold Italic? This is something I have to learn.

So how will I go about learning and knowing my type?
• Re-Read The Elements of Typographic Style
• Read more on Dutch Typographers
• Surf studiously Emigre, House Industries, FontShop
• Learn from I Love Typography and Jason Santa Maria
• Meticulously apply Typefaces to my Designs for web
• Design one weight of a new typeface

So do you have your New Year's Design Resolution written down?
Go ahead and become a much better designer in 2010 than you were in 2009.

Cheers to a Fresh New Year.
